How Do You Get A Lottery Green Card?

The Lottery Green Card also called the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program is a way that many aliens from other countries can come to live as permanent residents of the United States. Each year 50,000 people are admitted to the United States that are given permanent status froth Green Card Lottery.




The names of these 50,000 people are randomly selected through a computer from all the applications that have been submitted online. The people who are eligible come from countries where there is a low rate of immigration. In other words, some countries are under represented in the U.S. and these are the ones that are given priority to receive the lottery green card.

If you are interested in applying for the Green Card Lottery you will have to wait until about October of 2009 which will be the time when the next lottery green card will be issued for 2011. The lotteries for 2009 and 2010 have been completed.

The process is a simple one. When a person wants to get a lottery green card they first apply online at the U.S. Department of State website. They complete the form to the best of their ability then submit it. After the deadline for applications several applications are picked randomly by the computer.

Each computer pick is scrutinized by someone in the U.S. Department of State to make sure they have all the information requested. From these applications, 50,000 people are chosen. These applicants are then sent a letter from the U.S. Department of State to let them know they have won a space, tell them about fees they will need to pay and any other information that is necessary to convey.

It is important to note that an individual who is successful in securing a lottery green card is only told by regular mail; they do not send out emails notifying the individual of the process. Also, there is no charge to make the online application. If you do not receive the lottery you are not notified.

The U.S. Department of State warns that there are some websites that saying that they can help an individual make the application and get a space in the line for a lottery green card but they cannot. Only the U.S. Department of State can legitimately offer the Green Card Lottery.

Word and Education Criteria for Green Card Lottery

In order to receive a lottery green card an individual must meet several criteria. One of the first criteria is that they must have an occupation that falls within five “job zones.” These categories are listed in the Department of Labor (DOL) O*Net Online database.

In order to fulfill this criterion you must also have a high school diploma or its equivalent, have gone through a successful 12 year course of elementary and secondary education or have the two years of work experience.

In addition, there must be digital photos of the individual submitted that are current and there is a specific way that the photos have to be submitted. The photographs are very important to the application. The point is to have a picture that clearly shows the face of everyone applying on your application.

It is also important to note that in order to receive a lottery green card an individual must meet all the eligibility requirements that the U.S. law has created. Because of this people will be scrutinized more especially when they come for a country that has been identified as sponsors of terrorism. It is important to check to make sure that your country is eligible to apply.
